Cervical Screening Explained
The Cervical Screening Test replaced the Pap smear in Australia and checks for the human papillomavirus (HPV), which can cause changes to cervical cells. For most women, screening is recommended every 5 years from age 25 up to 74, though your doctor will advise what is right for you.
Many women are now eligible to self-collect their own sample in a private space at the clinic, which some find more comfortable. Your doctor can explain whether self-collection is suitable for you and guide you through the process.
